As a producer of high-quality Ceylon Tea in seventeen tea gardens situated in the best tea country of Sri Lanka, we pay attention to the echo systems of our tea gardens, have install our own hydro electric plants to produce clean power, provide free health care to our employees, utilize the most effective and hygienic technology in the production process, pioneered the Food Factory concept, and constantly being judged as the best amongst Regional Plantation Companies in Sri Lanka.
The most recent chapter of our story begins in 1992, when Talawakelle Tea Estates PLC was established following a privatization program initiated by the government of Sri Lanka. But the history of most of the 17 tea estates on our portfolio dates back to the late 19th century, when the first Scottish Planters set foot on this island of lavish landscapes and benign weather, to plant and nurture the first fields of tea.
Backed by such a rich heritage, since 1992, we have produced premium teas of the country, unsurpassed by any other. Since 2003, for nine consecutive years, we have been number 1 in rank among all High Growns We have also been unbeaten for eight consecutive years in the Low Grown category. In 2005 our largest tea garden, the Great Western Estate became the first estate in the country to obtain the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) certificate. In 2010 our estates acquired the Rainforest Alliance certification. In the early 2000s we obtained the ISO 22000 certification. As a member of the Ethical Tea Partnership, through our socially just and environmentally sustainable practices for many years we have being recognised as an ethical business company in the industry. We have now obtained 'Ethical Tea Partnership Certification" for all our estates. In addition, our Radella Estate, which produces Green Tea is UTZ certified. Our People are indeed our greatest asset. At Talawakelle Tea Estates PLC, we inculcate people with a customer oriented culture which focuses greatly on professionalism and the delivering of excellence. From its inception, the company has demonstrated a strong commitment to society and our CSR philosophy emphasizes more on Community Development as opposed to Charity. We are passionate about serving the communities we live in and this passion is greatly evident in the numerous projects and activities conducted by us at all our Tea Estates. From Childcare to Education, Health, Caring for Elders, Religious events, sports and recreation, we at Talawakelle Teas are always ready to go that extra mile in achieving our CSR objectives.
We continuously pledge our support to safeguarding our environment. In addition to implementing an innovative integrated pest management process, all vulnerable water sources on our estates are adequately protected to ensure regular replenishment and all wastewater from our estates is purified before being released into natural water ways and streams.
Energy Management and sourcing renewable energy is one of the key areas of sustainability for Talawakelle Teas. The Company is committed to reducing our indirect energy consumption and is proud to be a supplier to the national electricity grid.

We are also proud to be a part of the Hayleys Group, one the largest multinational businesses in Sri Lanka. Blending and logistics relating to our exports are handled by Mabroc Teas (Pvt) Ltd ( www.mabrocteas.com ), a Group Company of Hayleys. Our subsidiaries TTEL Hydro Power Company (Pvt) Ltd and TTEL Somerset Hydro Power Company (Pvt) Ltd are engaged in the generation of hydro power.
